Family Vacations

In some people’s mind, vacation is a time when you get to relax and take a break; but for me, it is a time when I get to bond with my family and make unforgettable memories. Family vacations are important in our lives, and it does not matter where you go; it is the people you are with, which matters the most. You get to know your family in ways you never thought of, and you might even get to try something new, which I discovered in some of my favourite vacations.

During the winter of 2010, I visited a heaven filled with snow – Hokkaido. Unfortunately, my dad was not able to come with us as he was busy working, but I enjoyed this vacation with my mom and my sister, Kathy. It was my very first time to visit a city with snow, and it was out of my imagination. Seeing the snow was spectacular, and to touch it, feels silky and smooth. Although the snow was wonderful, the weather was the exact opposite. It was below freezing almost every day, and my teeth chattered everywhere I went. Despite the horrible weather, my family still tried a new sport – skiing. None of us had ever skied before so we tried and hoped for the best. We all struggled at first, but managed to succeed in the end.

The following year in February was Chinese New Year again. We visit Phuket, a popular tourist spot, annually during this holiday. It is warm there all year round, and a lot of tourists living in colder environments travel there. Phuket consists of islands surrounded by the sea, making it famous for water sports. The most popular water sport is snorkeling, which is a hobby of my family’s. We have been to several places to snorkel before, but one of my favourites is in the middle of the enormous sea. As I dive into the water, everything in front of me is crystal clear. I slowly extend my hand out, filled with soaked bread, towards the crowd of fish and… WHOOSH! All the fish swim in my direction, starving. I feel like I almost faint in the army of fish surrounding me, trying to snatch even the tiniest bit of bread from my hands. That breathtaking sight always stays in my mind.

My family traveled to Toronto, a city we had never been to before, in the summer of 2011. I was pumped and psyched since I had not seen my family for a month. Even though my time at summer camp was tremendous, I missed them a lot. As soon as I saw them, I ran as fast as a cheetah and pounced on them, trying to extend my arms and hug everyone at the same time. My friend, Sidney, and her family, whom I had stayed with in New York, looked at me like I was a monster coming at them. But, their expressions faded away within seconds once they realised how they would have felt if they were in the same situation. During the long stay in Toronto, we went to various tourist attractions such as the Toronto Zoo, Canada’s Wonderland, and a historical place called Black Creek Pioneer Village. However, my utmost favourite one is Niagara Falls, which is one of the most beautiful and famous waterfalls in the world. The water flowed towards the curved drop and poured down a hundred times heavier than the worst rainstorm you could ever imagine. To make things even better, the water vapour from the falls caused a rainbow to appear from the inside of the falls, reaching towards the sky; at that moment, my eyes lit up and sparkled, knowing that seeing this is a once in a life time experience. Those few days turned into hours, and we reluctantly departed Toronto.

So you see how important family vacations are and how I have had the time of my life during these special times. These memories will be treasured forever, reminding me that no matter what happens, my family will always be there.
